Smithbridge Trolley Derby
6 April 2002
Part of the official opening ceremony for a new section of
motorway in Tauranga, New Zealand
With the junior heats underway the local vintage car brigade
paraded up the course, which was very nice and some of
the vehicles were magnificent. They turned around and
came back again so that we could see that they looked
just the same from the other side.
Then it was back to business with the junior heats
Some of the trolleys needed a bit of help
to reach the finish line
These billy carts were very difficult to control and caused
many crashes. One crashed three times in one race.
They were for hire by the organisers, a noble idea, but
they are just not designed for hills like this.
